In a brief interview, Sills describes Daughter of the Regiment as "a silly little story, one long episode of Lucille Ball. I play Marie as Lucille Ball with high notes." That may tell you what to expect here....The heroine herself is sometimes fluttery and pallid, but the trills are wonderful, the coloratura is dazzling, the high notes are in place, and the acting is enthusiastic. I can imagine better orchestral playing and more dynamic conducting, but you won't notice all that much: it's the singers' show, and everyone is having a great time.... Sills already had five seasons of Devereux under her belt, and while the incised fury and feverish emotion of the part's declamatory line did her vocal health no good, by this time she had molded her characterization into something as commanding as it was startling. The intervening years have only sharpened the effect. ...Read More - Harvey E. Phillips, Opera News

Preserved here are one of the NYCO's most successful productions, and one of Beverly Sills' finest roles... Sills had all the vocal equipment for the title part: the agility, the high-soprano range extension, and a girlish, floating quality capable of fullness and color. Her grasp of the language and style was also secure. The final scene is well sung and affecting...Read More- Conrad L. Osborne, The Metropolitan Opera Guide to Opera on Video

Beverly Sills is an engaging mistress of the audience, and the videotape is most valuable for preserving that aspect of her style, muted even on her "actual performance" audio records. In "Un voce" she decorates outrageously and plays her cadenzas to the audience. "Here I am," she implies with a wink, "a prima donna with a sense of humor, and I am going to entertain you. This is Rosina. Isn't she amazing, and aren't we having fun?" The approach, and the brilliantly negotiated aria, get huge applause. In the lesson scene she sings "Contra un cor" and then the "Ah, Vous Dirai-je Maman" variations with equally spectacular accuracy. One understands again the several facets of her reputation...Read More- London Green, The Metropolitan Opera Guide to Opera on Video

The 1912 "Ariadne" is mainly known for its extended version of Zerbinetta's big aria, and also for some very difficult extra music written for her. The aria threatens to go on forever, it is in the key of E (the revision is set in D), it includes a number of passing high F's and in fact is both homage and trump of all coloratura extravaganzas in history, to the point of being almost unsingable..Sills' career and artistry were in high gear at the time of this "Ariadne auf Naxos" performance. What she does here may be the most amazing document by an American singer in the 20th century. She does elide a few of those high F's, but otherwise she tosses off this impossible music with miraculous ease, brilliance, and precision of attack, pitch and tone. Her German is excellent. She gets the joke, she is supremely in command of the murderous demands Strauss makes and, indeed, makes it all seem like child's play. It's hard to think of any other live vocal documents that are quite this stunning.- From Albert Innaurato's introduction in the booklet accompanying the VAI DVD

...in Traviata, Sills looks glamorous and sophisticated, and she moves with a naturalness that makes her co-stars appear awkward. Her face is always expressive, and her timbre has an intrinsic pathos appropriate to the character. She has no trouble, of course, with the coloratura of the first act, and she can waft the slow, gentle phrases of ‘Dite alla giovine’ and ‘Addio del passato’ ethereally aloft... Read More- Ralph V.
